Living the Prop Life

We're hard at work getting ready getting all our ducks in a row for PBX next month and it's got me thinking about how different things are from last year.

Back then I was still living the 9 to 5 (or rather 10 pm to 6 am in my case). I know a lot of you who operate your own photo booth businesses can relate to going from employee to entrepreneur and how much of a learning curve comes with it. You need to think about marketing, managing inventory, accounting, customer service, the list of things to think about is endless.

The real trick though is doing all that from home, where all the distractions and demands on your attention are always trying to pull you away from work. Being your own boss means being both the guy asking for a longer lunch break and the guy who needs to put his foot down and say "No! We have luxury photo booth props to sell! Get to it!"

Being your own boss means exactly that: no one's going to give you a list of what needs to get done, so it's up to you to figure that out and organize yourself. I've found that what works for me is setting up a routine of recurring tasks and following it day by day. It's important to get those habits formed so that on days where motivation fails (and we all get those days) you can fall back on them instead of just slacking off.

But don't forget to include some breaks in that routine too. All work and no play, as they say. :)
